Storebuilder Blog - Site Related

Today I finally made the decision that I should have made a while back and I'm moving the storebuilder site to a new hosting service. Not because the existing service is no good or anything like that, just that the server is still running php 4.3 and if I upgrade it, with all of the sites that have been built since 2004 it's probably going to mean a ton of work to fix broken things once the upgrade is done.

So it's going to be better to move this site to it's own hosting plan and leave all of the older sites ticking away happily.

I just bought a nice shiny new linking package which is going to replace the decrepit listings package that I'm currently struggling with and looks awful.

So awful that I haven't been inspired to do any work on it for weeks! That means it must be bad! Trouble is the new package runs on php 5 or better and so I can't get it to run, hence the move.

Once I've got everything up and running again I'll be on the lookout for some better blogging software because trying to blog with joomla is simply a bad experience and I'll be looking at integrating wordpress or finding something that can do a better job.

To move a joomla site:

Backup your existing site using joomlapack.

Backup your exisiting site by downloading everything via ftp.

Make a copy of the database and download it to your PC.

Change the nameservers for your domain.

Change the mail settings on your new control panel so that you start getting the mail from your new hosting provider.

Use joomlapack to upload everything once your server starts resolving the new address.

In reality nothing ever goes this smoothly but hopefully by tomorrow we'll be back up and running on our new server.
